What is Lawn Aeration?

Lawn aeration involves the removal of small soil "plugs" or cores out of the lawn. Most lawn aerating is done mechanically with an aerator. During lawn aerating the core aerator generally extracts 1/2-3/4 inch diameter soil plugs and then deposits those plugs onto your lawn. The holes the aerator leaves during the lawn aeration process are typically 1-6 inches deep and 3-6 inches apart.

What will lawn aeration do for my lawn?

As lawns age or sustain heavy use from play, sports activities, pets, vehicle traffic and parking, soil compaction can result. Compacted soil is most common in poorly drained or wet areas. Compaction greatly reduces the space in the soil where oxygen is found. Since roots require oxygen to grow and to absorb nutrients and water, compacted soil has a negative impact on your lawn’s ability to take in nutrients and water.  In addition, compacted soil makes for much slower root growth and contributes to thin or sparse lawns. Lawn aerating helps to deter soil compaction and will keep your lawn looking its best at all times!
